The original need came from the San Antonio Library System needing to catch up with northwest San Antonio’s exponential growth. Located in northwest part of San Antonio and Bexar County, the existing natural landscape varies between South Texas wildflower meadows and Texas Hill Country live oaks. An old homestead had previously occupied the property and the goal was to maintain that image and feel. The site also contained large Centennial oak trees that had to be worked around. There was a mutual understanding on both the builder and Architect RVK Architects to respect the once-rural Texas land through the building form and site preservation. The end result is a 19,000 square-foot facility in which the steel frame is not hidden but is incorporated into the design of the interior.
